What follows from this particular argument is pretty clear: you can have diversity or you can have economic justice, but you can’t have both.

That is unfair. The suggestion I read from the article is this: Economic justice and diversity might be at odds *with attitudes as they currently are*. So the left should work on changing people’s attitudes (see the very last sentence of the article) as well as providing economic justice.
